Upside down catfish (Synodontis nigriventris)

This species of catfish swims is popular in the aquarium trade for its habit of swimming upside down. It has developed adaptations for this behavior- their bellies are dark while their backs are light, which acts as counter-shading. That means that predators looking up at the catfish will “see” it as part of the light surface and predators looking down will see the catfish as part of the dark river bottom.

It is thought that swimming upside down makes it easier to feed on algae growing on the undersides of submerged logs and branches.
